Massage Envy, the pioneer and national leader of professional, convenient and affordable massage and spa services, in conjunction with the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, announced today the results of a new study that concludes moderate pressure massage therapy can decrease pain for rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Additionally, the study found that rheumatoid arthritis patients experienced perceived greater grip strength and greater range of motion in their wrists and large upper joints, including elbows and shoulders, after receiving moderate pressure massage therapy for one month. The study’s overview and results were published in the 2013 19 edition of Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice Journal.

“Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that causes joints to become swollen, tender and stiff. While there is no cure to date, we do know now that moderate pressure massage therapy can help relieve pain and improve the quality of life for patients,” said C.G. Funk, vice president of industry relations and product development for Massage Envy. “The findings will be utilized to better educate our therapists, members, guests and the public on how to best incorporate massage into an overall wellness plan.”

Led by Tiffany Field, Ph.D., of the Touch Research Institute, the study examined the effects of moderate pressure versus light pressure massage therapy on 42 adults with rheumatoid arthritis in the upper limbs. The adults were randomly assigned to a moderate pressure or a light pressure massage therapy group. A therapist massaged the affected arm and shoulder once a week for a four-week period and also taught the participant self-massage to be done once daily. By the end of the one-month period, results of the study demonstrated the moderate pressure massage group had less pain, increased grip strength, increased wrist flexion, increased elbow flexion and increased shoulder abduction. The study also found that participants in both groups experienced a reduction in depressed mood and anxiety.

“As patients with rheumatoid arthritis work with their doctors to determine the best treatment option, we recommend discussing routine massage therapy given the positive effects found in our study,” said Field. “In addition to physical activity, such as yoga, moderate pressure massage therapy along with self-massage techniques can help manage the pain and stress that occurs from various forms of arthritis.”

Over the last eight years, Massage Envy has donated more than $150,000 to support research related to the benefits of massage therapy. Today, there are more than 870 Massage Envy locations, making it the largest system of franchised massage and spa clinics in the industry. The company has created 21,000 new massage therapists positions since 2002 and plans to add 1,500 new positions annually through 2018.

In 2011, Massage Envy formed a partnership with the Arthritis Foundation to raise awareness and funds to support the organization’s mission to prevent, control and cure arthritis. In total, Massage Envy has raised more than $1 million in two, one-day Healing Hands for Arthritis events. The brand is also as a national sponsor of the Arthritis Foundation’s 250 Arthritis Walk® events around the country, where local Massage Envy owners share information about the benefits of massage therapy, provide chair massages and support the Arthritis Foundation at their respective local walks. Massage Envy and the Arthritis Foundation share a common understanding about the devastating effects of the disease on the body and the potential for massage therapy to relieve and control certain symptoms.

The Arthritis Walk®, part of the Let’s Move Together® movement, is the Arthritis Foundation’s nationwide signature event to raise public awareness and funds to fight arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability. In joining the 2013 walk, participants become part of a nationwide community that encourages people to prevent or treat arthritis through movement. This year’s goal for the Dallas walk is $275,000.

The event features a three-mile and one-mile course, with arthritis information and activities for the entire family. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their dogs at participating events.

Massage is “a ‘Recharge’ for Your Battery – Which Moms Need!”

Sometimes a chance phone call can change people’s lives. In September 2012, mother and daughter Heidi and Kamryn Bordges received word from the Arthritis Foundation that Massage Envy Las Colinas wanted to sponsor Kamryn for Massage Envy’s Healing Hands for Arthritis event in October. Heidi knew of Massage Envy because her mother had been a client.

Nine-year-old Kamryn has a form of Juvenile Arthritis. She was diagnosed with polyarticular arthritis – meaning it affected five or more joints at the time – in 2009 when she was six.

The mother and daughter have been going to Massage Envy Las Colinas once a month since last fall. “Kamryn looks forward to it every time. She has the same therapist each visit. Massage therapist Cyna always asks what has been bothering her lately,” Heidi explains. “I decided to do the massages monthly as something fun for us to do together. Since I have to be in the room with her, I’m getting a massage too! Kam and I make a special morning or afternoon, either going out to eat or grabbing a coffee and hot chocolate, maybe do a little shopping. I really look forward to our day also.”

Kamryn began taking gymnastics at age 2 because, Heidi says, “she had SOOOO much energy. When she first started having symptoms, she had a hard time walking and running, she moved slowly, tired very easily. Her gymnastics coach noticed that she was moving ‘like an old lady.’”

Heidi continues, “Now that she has been on medication for three years, she can run, jump, play like all the other kids. However, she does have ‘flares’ when her knees, ankles and shoulders give her pain. Usually, after taking some Advil and using a heating pad, she feels better. And the massages have helped a lot!”

Medication, in this case, is an injection Kamryn’s parents give her at home once a week. Heidi states, “She ABSOLUTLEY hates this! The medication makes her nauseous and tired and dizzy the next day. But she would not be able to live the life she lives without it. The doctors have not found any more swelling in the past year, so they are slowly reducing the amount of medicine we give her. Her shots are a major source of anxiety for her, but she tries to be brave.”

Many arthritis patients find massage therapy to be beneficial, and Heidi can attest to this: “The massages have definitely helped Kam with her aches and pains. Her arthritis has always been such a negative thing. It hurts, she has to get shots, and she is the only one at school and gym that has this problem. Going to Massage Envy and getting her massages is a special thing for her.”

“The Massage Envy staff is amazing! We love them. They make Kamryn feel so special every time she comes in. After their ‘Healing Hands’ event, after they had been so generous with Kamryn, she said on the way home, ‘Mom, I’m so blessed.’ It brought tears to my eyes. Cyna is wonderful. She knows how to deal with Kam when she has a ticklish spot. She knows what works for her and has been such a blessing for us. The whole staff has!”

“Massage Envy Las Colinas was proud to sponsor Kamryn for Healing Hands for Arthritis. She and Heidi love to come every month and get their massages,” says Darla Perkins, Clinic Administrator for Massage Envy Las Colinas. “Kamryn has even come by the clinic on days she doesn’t have an appointment to show off in her gymnastics uniform – they’ve become part of our family!”

Heidi adds, “I get massages for many reasons – relaxation, stress relief, relieving muscle tension. I sit at a desk all day, so my neck and shoulders are often tense. Massages are an important part of stress relief and taking care of yourself. I even convinced a co-worker to sign up with Massage Envy – I’m a huge supporter of massages and what they can do for you mentally and physically. It’s a ‘recharge’ for your battery – which moms need!”

Mother’s Day is May 12, 2013. Between April 26 and May 12, Massage Envy has a special $99 gift card offer. Buy a $99 gift card during this time, and the recipient can get two 1-hour massage sessions, each with a Sugar Foot Scrub, at a Massage Envy clinic, or one 1-hour massage session with a Murad® facial and Sugar Foot Scrub at a Massage Envy spa. This offer is valid only at the 31 Dallas-Fort Worth area Massage Envy clinics and spas. The signature Hot Stone Envy® is not available with this offer.

Massage Envy DFW clinics are teaming with members of the Delta Theta Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority (AOII) at Texas Woman’s University for the 2013 Dallas Arthritis Walk® on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Massage Envy is a national sponsor of the Arthritis Walk, and AOII’s international philanthropy is arthritis research and the American Juvenile Arthritis Organization.

The 2013 Dallas Arthritis Walk will be held at Park Central, 12700 Park Central in Dallas, from 8:30 AM to noon. Participants can register online prior to May 17 or register at the walk. To register online, make a donation, or for more information on the Dallas walk, go to http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/waiver.asp?ievent=1045457.

At Massage Envy, an introductory one-hour massage session (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) is just $49. Memberships are available for $59 per month and include a one-hour massage session. Members can enjoy unlimited additional one-hour massage sessions at the $39 member rate. The introductory price for any of the four Massage Envy signature facials is just $59. Clients can have a facial for only $10 more than the regular Massage Envy massage therapy price.

Massage Envy DFW and Alpha Omicron Pi’s Delta Theta Chapter Teaming Up for May 18, 2013 Event

Laura Cooper, a member of Delta Theta Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority (AOII), knows what it’s like to live with Juvenile Arthritis. The arthritis affected her right hand and “I was very blessed to not have as severe arthritis as some!” she says.

Now her sorority chapter is working with the 31 Massage Envy DFW clinics in the 2013 Dallas Arthritis Walk® on Saturday, May 18, 2013. AOII members will volunteer in the DFW Massage Envy tent, spreading the word about arthritis and massage, and donate funds they raise to the Arthritis Foundation. Massage Envy is a national sponsor of the Arthritis Walk; AOII’s international philanthropy is arthritis research and the American Juvenile Arthritis Organization.

The Texas Woman’s University student, who grew up in Carrollton and finishes her junior year in May, was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis when she was 7 years old. Her right hand would be stiff and painful when she woke up. A doctor initially told Laura’s mother the hand was calloused from learning to write.

Laura’s sister is severely disabled and went regularly to Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. One day her mother asked the doctor to look at Laura’s hand. He immediately recognized it as arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis is often accompanied by psoriasis, and Laura was no exception. Her father has psoriasis. She began taking medicine and has been in remission since she was 14. “I had a good experience with Scottish Rite,” the right-hander notes.

In school, “My hand would sometimes cramp during classes. As I got older and have been in remission, I don’t have as much pain,” she explains. “Every once in awhile if I’ve been writing too much I can really feel it in my joints, but this doesn’t happen frequently. Or in the winter when it’s really cold and hard to move your fingers and toes, I notice it being even more difficult to move my fingers due to the limited mobility. But I am in remission and do not have pain on a daily basis, just stiffness and soreness in those circumstances. And I am not on any medication!”

“I do have to get my eyes tested every year because Juvenile Arthritis can affect eyesight,” she adds. Also, Laura did not get massage or other therapy for her hand as a child but wishes something had been done – her hand still shows the effects of the arthritis. If massage could help after so many years, she would try it.

Juvenile Arthritis is an umbrella term for the many autoimmune and inflammatory conditions affecting children ages 16 and younger. None of the several types of JA has a known cause or cure.

Radio personality Bonnie Curry of KLTY 94.9 FM will serve as team captain of Massage Envy DFW’s team of walkers. Listen to her midday radio show – 10 AM to 2 PM weekdays – for details about a sponsorship contest for walking teams and to register, donate and walk with her at the May 18 Arthritis walk.

In joining the 2013 walk, participants become part of a nationwide community that encourages people to prevent or treat arthritis through movement.
Arthritis is the leading cause of disability, reduced quality of life, and high health care costs in the U.S. Of the 46 million Americans who suffer from arthritis, nearly half say that arthritis limits their normal activities. The good news is that recent studies suggest that massage can help reduce pain and increase mobility in those who suffer from arthritis. Massage Envy offers a Massage Wellness Program to help cope with chronic arthritis pain.

For more information about the Arthritis Foundation and Juvenile Arthritis, go to www.Arthritis.org.

At Massage Envy, an introductory one-hour massage session (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) is just $49 and a one-hour Healthy Skin facial session at $59.

Both Want to Help Stop MS in Its Tracks

Now rolling into its 6th year, Massage Envy DFW will take part in the 2013 Bike MS: Sam’s Club Round-Up Ride – scheduled Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5 – in two ways: sponsoring Riders Against MS as the Massage Envy team and having licensed massage therapists on site to give massages to cyclists.

Brendan McBratney, owner of Massage Envy’s Craig Ranch & Stonebriar clinics and the Frisco North Spa, provides purple cycling jerseys with the Massage Envy logo to Riders Against MS. He was inspired to sponsor the team by founder Rodney Moffitt of Frisco, who was diagnosed with MS eight years ago.

Massage Envy believes in giving back to the community, whatever that community might be and in whatever way it can. Helping the people who ride for MS is just one of those ways.

“We are proud to support the Riders Against MS in this important event and to help raise awareness of and funding for MS in our community,” says McBratney. “By providing on-site therapeutic massage, we hope to enable all riders to not only complete the ride, but to feel great while doing it. Massage helps reduce fatigue and speeds up the recovery time of athletes.”

The two-day, 153-mile bike ride from Frisco to Texas Motor Speedway, organized by the National MS Society, raises funds to help fight multiple sclerosis (MS) and brings awareness about a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. This is the 26th year in North Texas for what has become the premier cycling series in the U.S.

In 2012, almost $1.8 million was raised by the Dallas event. According to Steve Vogel in the Carrollton office, this year’s goal is to reach $1.8 million and hopefully $2 million. The Riders Against MS team hopes to raise $20,000.

“We really appreciate Massage Envy’s participation in this event. After a long day of riding, the riders are grateful for the massages,” Vogel says.

Besides cheering on Riders Against MS, Massage Envy will have a tent at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday. As riders come in from the 81-mile ride, Massage Envy therapists will provide massages to team members and other cyclists to ease discomforts from Saturday’s ride and prepare for Sunday. Massage Envy is the leading provider of massage therapy in the U.S.

The ride begins at 7 a.m. Saturday at Frisco’s Dr. Pepper Ballpark and stops overnight at Texas Motor Speedway. On Sunday morning, cyclists will make a lap around the speedway before completing the rest of the ride and circling back to finish at the speedway. An estimated 3,000 riders are expected to take part in the 153-mile ride.

Sports massage therapy is one of the options Massage Envy offers clients. Whether professional or weekend athlete, sports massage performed by a licensed massage therapist can benefit anyone. The focus is on areas of the body that are over- or underused and stressed from repetitive, and sometimes unfamiliar, movements.

More and more athletes are including sports massage therapy as part of a balanced training regimen. Sports massage can not only reduce recovery time during training or after an event, but it can help an athlete prepare for the activity. The benefits of specially designed sports massage are many: promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries, and prepares the body and mind for optimal performance.

Signup continues until the day of the race. Connect on Facebook (Bike MS: Sam’s Club Ride) and https://twitter.com/#!/BikeMS_DFW (BikeMS_DFW).

DFW Massage Envy Owners Pledge $30,000

DALLAS, TX (April 16, 2013)…Massage Envy DFW clinics are teaming with members of the Delta Theta Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority (AOII) for the 2013 Dallas Arthritis Walk® on Saturday, May 18, 2013. The partnership is a good match: Massage Envy is a national sponsor of the Arthritis Walk, and AOII’s international philanthropy is arthritis research and the American Juvenile Arthritis Organization.

Arthritis consists of more than 100 different diseases or conditions – musculoskeletal disorders – that destroy joints, bones, muscles, cartilage and other connective tissues, hampering or halting physical movement. Juvenile Arthritis (JA) is an umbrella term for the many autoimmune and inflammatory conditions affecting children ages 16 and younger. There are several types of JA, all with no known cause or cure.

Ten-year-old Sarah Lewinski was diagnosed with JA at age 2. She must take low-dose chemotherapy drugs, and her vision is at risk. To see a new face of arthritis, watch her story – Sarah’s SuperStars 2013 – on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnQlF1JtPM4.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to bring attention to children with Juvenile Arthritis. And we are excited to be partnering with Massage Envy,” says Courtney Boyle, president of the Delta Theta Chapter. “For many people, including children, massage can help ease the pain from arthritis.”

Texas Woman’s University in Denton is home to the Delta Theta Chapter of AOII. Members will act as brand ambassadors during the walk, volunteering in the Massage Envy tent to spread the word about arthritis and massage. They will also donate funds they raise to the Arthritis Foundation.

“Some of our youngest clients are children living with Juvenile Arthritis. It’s difficult to see them dealing with constant pain at such a young age, but the therapeutic massage at Massage Envy can help. So it means a lot to our employees to sponsor this event and participate in the Arthritis Walk,” notes Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Developer for Massage Envy.

Radio personality Bonnie Curry of KLTY 94.9 FM will serve as team captain of Massage Envy DFW’s team of walkers. Listen for her interview with 10-year-old Sarah Lewinski and her announcement about a sponsorship contest for walking teams on her midday radio show – 10 AM to 2 PM weekdays – as she encourages listeners to register, donate and walk with her at the May 18 Arthritis walk. Bonnie’s team is Massage Envy – Bonnie Curry’s Team.

To enter the team sponsorship contest, register on Massage Envy DFW’s Facebook tab (www.facebook.com/MassageDFW) and write a short essay for a chance to win the Grand Prize: a $500 donation and shirts for your team, plus three 1-hour Massage Envy gift cards for the team captain. The contest will run from Wednesday, April 3, through April 28, 2013.

Uncle Julio’s Restaurant is adding their support to the Dallas Arthritis Walk. The first 25 people to sign up for Massage Envy Bonnie’s Team will receive an Uncle Julio’s $50 gift card, which can be picked up at the Massage Envy tent at the walk.

At the Massage Envy tent, five licensed massage therapists will be performing chair massages and giving away Massage Envy offer cards and Uncle Julio’s $10 gift cards.

If one of the mothers in your life has arthritis, and even if they don’t, remember that Mother’s Day is May 12. Between April 26 and May 12, Massage Envy has a special $99 gift card offer. Buy a $99 gift card during this time, and the recipient can get two 1-hour massage sessions, each with a Sugar Foot Scrub, at a Massage Envy clinic, or one 1-hour massage session with Sugar Foot Scrub and a Murad® facial at a Massage Envy spa. This offer is valid only at the 30 DFW area Massage Envy clinics and spas.

“The 15 owners and 30 clinics of Massage Envy DFW want to step up their support for the Arthritis Walk this year also,” adds O’Pry. “Each clinic has committed to raising an additional $1000 each, for a minimum total of $30,000 toward the Dallas walk’s fundraising.”

In a statement from the Arthritis Foundation: “We aren’t just fighting arthritis and helping the millions of people who live with arthritis pain. We’re making the impact of arthritis unacceptable and taking a stand, moving together to help prevent and treat this serious and painful disease through research, education and community programs.”

Participants walk for friends or family members with arthritis, and those with arthritis wear blue hats to signify their action to take control of their condition. The event features a three-mile and one-mile course, with arthritis information and activities for the entire family. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their dogs at participating events.

The walk will be held at Park Central, located at 12700 Park Central in Dallas, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Participants who register online prior to May 17 can just check in, or participants may register at the walk. All fundraising donations should be turned in at check-in/registration. To register online, donate, or for more information on the Dallas walk, go to http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/waiver.asp?ievent=1045457.

•	8:30 a.m.:	Registration
•	9:40 a.m.:	Announcements
•	10:00 a.m.:	Walk begins
•	*Food/Games throughout event*

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability, reduced quality of life, and high health care costs in the U.S. Of the 46 million Americans who suffer from arthritis, nearly half say that arthritis limits their normal activities. The good news is that recent studies suggest that massage can help reduce pain and increase mobility in those who suffer from arthritis. Massage Envy offers a Massage Wellness Program to help cope with chronic arthritis pain.

Following the walk, check out Massage Envy DFW’s Facebook page for photos of the event.

At Massage Envy, an introductory one-hour massage session (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) is just $49 and a one-hour Healthy Skin facial session at $59. Memberships are available for $59 per month and include a one-hour massage session.

Spa Services Will Be Offered at New Location

Massage Envy Campbell will be on the move in the next few weeks, a change that will allow the clinic to convert to a spa and add facials to the full menu of massage and other services – including aromatherapy, Pro Heat, Hot Stone and Sugar Foot Scrub – offered to clients.

Currently located in the Preston Trails Shopping Center at Campbell and Preston Roads in North Dallas, in April Massage Envy Campbell SPA will become one of the newest businesses in the Pavilion North Shopping Center at 7529 Campbell Rd., Suite 301, Dallas, TX 75248.

The new space will have 13 rooms, including four dual purpose spa rooms for facials and massage. “Construction is coming along nicely at the new Campbell location,” says owner Bruce McGovern, who also owns two other Massage Envy clinics and a spa. “We anticipate work being completed and open on April 16, and we’re looking to schedule the grand opening on May 23 at 12 Noon.”

He continues, “We’re one of the last tenants in our current location. Business has declined as each co-tenant left the shopping center, and most of that is from the neighborhood. The Pavilion North Center draws from a larger region. We believe this move will help us grow the business.”

It will also bring jobs to the area. McGovern notes that the spa will be hiring four licensed estheticians, plus five additional massage therapists due to the increase in services offered.

“Massage Envy Campbell SPA will provide more people with better access to all of Massage Envy’s services,” says Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth regional developer for Massage Envy. “We want everyone to know the benefits of massage and facials, and to make these services available and convenient. This is a positive move for Massage Envy Campbell.”

“We think our current clients will like our new place. We’re excited about the move and hope they will be too – a new space to work in, new services, new clients,” adds McGovern. “The grand opening should be fun and will be here before you know it.”

All Massage Envy clinics employ only licensed massage therapists. Types of therapeutic massage services available are: trigger point, Swedish, deep tissue, sports, reflexology, cranial sacral, prenatal, geriatric and the signature Hot Stone Envy®. Clients can also choose to add deep muscle, AromaTherapy or Massage Envy’s new sugar foot scrub enhancement therapies to any session.

Murad® skincare products are used for Massage Envy SPA facials. Murad® Healthy Skin facials feature groundbreaking products specially formulated for Massage Envy SPA facial treatments: Environmental Shield® Vitamin C, Clarifying Enzyme Acne, Anti-Aging and Sensitive Skin.

At Massage Envy, an introductory one-hour massage session (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) is just $49.

Top DFW Therapist Works at Top Clinic in Texas

Massage Envy Old Town was the #1 Massage Envy in Texas and the #4 clinic in the country for 2012, and it also has the 2012 Massage Therapist of the Year for the DFW region – Larry Morgan.

Morgan has been a licensed massage therapist for almost 15 years and has been at Massage Envy Old Town for nearly six of those years. Before that he had his own business.

“I really enjoy Massage Envy – it’s a great place to work,” he says, adding with a laugh, “It gives me the opportunity to do what I like, without having to do my own laundry, make appointments – those types of things.”

“We’ve worked hard to make Massage Envy Old Town one of the top clinics. Our clients are an important part of that and so are outstanding massage therapists like Larry Morgan. We couldn’t be happier that he is receiving this honor – he’s earned it,” says clinic owner Bruce McGovern.

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Larry Morgan for several years. The way Larry goes above and beyond for his clients represents the Massage Envy brand in a great way,” Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth regional developer for Massage Envy. “So much that the regional team partnered with Bruce McGovern to sponsor Larry in his personal development when he went to the massage therapy instructors course to become a licensed massage instructor. We are extremely proud of Larry and this recognition.”

“I got into massage therapy after being in management for many years. A common complaint was stress,” Morgan explains. “I enjoy helping people de-stress. I like working in a job where people want to come see you.”

Recently licensed as an instructor, he is Lead Therapist at Massage Envy Old Town and performed almost 2000 hours of massage in 2012. Though he likes to help people get rid of the effects of stress, much of his work is therapeutic – such as TMJ or whiplash. A lot of his clients are injured or are athletes in need of therapy rather than relaxation.

Morgan will attend the Massage Envy conference in Phoenix, Arizona, in April. Massage Envy Corporate holds the annual conference to recognize achievement. Regional Therapists of the Year from all over the country will be honored at the awards ceremony.

“We’re looking forward to the conference in April,” adds McGovern. “Not only will Larry be honored, but Massage Envy Old Town will be recognized. It will definitely be an evening for celebrating – 2012 was a very good year.”

Massage Envy Old Town is located at 5500 Greenville Ave., Suite 404, Dallas, TX 75206.

At Massage Envy, an introductory one-hour massage session (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) is just $49. Memberships are available for $59 per month and include a one-hour massage session. Members can enjoy unlimited additional one-hour massage sessions at the $39 member rate.
