The staff at Massage Envy Spa-Rowlett Crossing will host a drive for bone marrow donors on May 9, 2012.
Fundraising in support of bone marrow donations began April 1 at the spa, with all proceeds going to the Be the Match Foundation. On May 9, Massage Envy staff and clients can take a simple cheek swab to see if they are a bone marrow match. The spa is located at 4301 Lakeview Parkway, Suite 600, in Rowlett.
“Our publicist, Jo Trizila, a bone marrow recipient herself, inspired us to conduct the drive,” said Dr. Richard Klics, owner of the Massage Envy Spa – Rowlett Crossing. “The profound and amazing truth is that a single bone marrow donor can save a life. A cheek swab makes it easy to determine if you’re a bone marrow match. Take a moment and save a life.”
You do not have to be a member of Massage Envy to participate. Walk-in volunteers for the swab test are welcome. The clinic is located at 4301 Lakeview Parkway Suite 600, Rowlett, TX 75089.
Bone marrow donors have the power to heal, Dr. Klics said. For some 10,000 patients a year with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases, their only hope for a second chance at life is a marrow transplant from someone outside their family.
Patients and their families count on the National Marrow Donor Program and the Be the Match Foundation. Over the past 25 years the donor program has made 50,000 transplants possible, bringing hope to thousands more each year.

Recognizes Coppell Employee for Good Citizenship
In honor of National Volunteer Week – April 15-21 – Massage Envy is encouraging its employees to give back to the community. As part of that initiative, Massage Envy is saluting Carrollton resident Stephanie Bush, a massage therapist at Massage Envy Coppell, for her outstanding and continued service to the community.
“Stephanie has a heart for giving. She volunteers for several charities, most notably, her work with HomelessPartners.com and its Christmas Wish program, where she is in charge of arranging donations for homeless folks around the Metroplex. She also is involved with Massage Envy’s Arthritis Foundation initiatives, and for several months, she donated all of her tips to help a co-worker who was out injured,” said Ashley Martin, clinic manager at Massage Envy Coppell.
Bush has been a massage therapist for five years. She says she chose this career for the same reason that she does charity work – she enjoys helping people.
“As a massage therapist, I really enjoy seeing the benefits the clients have when they receive a massage. They may come in with a migraine and leave without one or they may have a lower-back problem that we’re able to help solve. I love helping people. I just want to do everything I can to help those around me,” said Bush.
Bush got her start in charity work about eight years ago, while living in Las Vegas and working for a bagel shop. Store policy was to throw away uneaten bagels at the end of the day, but Bush had other ideas.
“I just couldn’t stand throwing away a huge, five gallon bag of bagels while there were so many people who didn’t have enough to eat, so I started taking the bags downtown and giving them to the homeless. It really opened up my eyes and my heart to homelessness. That’s why I’m involved with HomelessPartners.com. People often have a negative perspective on homelessness, but this program allows them to see homeless people for who they really are,” said Bush.
HomelessPartners.com allows homeless men, women and children to tell their stories, and at Christmas time, make a “wish list” of what they need most. People can log onto the site and donate items on the wish lists – coats, hats, gloves, socks and shoes are some of the most common wished-for items.
In addition to her work with HomelessPartners.com, Bush is actively involved with HOPE worldwide, an organization that’s dedicated to assisting economically disadvantaged people around the world. Bush participates in a number of HOPE worldwide programs locally, including a fire safety campaign and an educational program for inner-city children. She’s also involved with Massage Envy’s charitable work with the Arthritis Foundation.
“Massage Envy does several programs to help support the Arthritis Foundation. Right now we’re helping with the ‘Let’s Move Together’ program, which encourages people to move every day to prevent or treat arthritis. We also host the ‘Healing Hands for Arthritis’ fundraiser in October. Last year Massage Envy raised nearly $500,000 for the cause,” ” said Lance O’Pry, Dallas-Fort Worth regional developer for Massage Envy.
