Massage Envy clinic in Dallas tops $2M, stands atop franchise ranks

When he opened a Massage Envy clinic here in 2005, Bruce McGovern thought the location might produce several hundred thousand dollars in annual revenue.

It did – and then some.

The Massage Envy clinic, in the Old Town Shopping Center on Greenville Avenue in Dallas, now generates more than $2 million in annual revenue. The Old Town franchise and River Oaks in Houston are the top two revenue producers for Massage Envy, the leading provider of massage therapy in the United States.

McGovern attributes the clinic’s growth and success to old-fashioned service. “First and foremost, we want to give the customer the absolute best massage experience they can imagine,” he says. “Everything we do is aimed at making the experience better for the client. A wonderful experience for one client attracts others, many of whom are experiencing massage therapy for the first time.”

“The attention to customer service is the defining factor in the Old Town clinic’s growth, making it one of the top two Massage Envy franchises in the United States,” said Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Developer for Massage Envy. He said Massage Envy is open in 42 states, has 622 clinics nationwide, and 27 locations in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

At Massage Envy, an introductory one-hour massage session (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) is just $39. Memberships are available for $49 per month and include a one-hour massage session. Members can enjoy unlimited additional one-hour massage sessions at the $39 member rate.

“When you make it comfortable, affordable, and convenient for a client, they keep coming back,” says Bruce McGovern.

The market for massage therapy continues to grow, even in a slow economy. An estimated $5-7 billion a year is spent on massage therapy; consumers visit clinics approximately 140 million times a year.

Massage Envy’s franchising of clinics has produced wide name recognition, making the company the brand name for massage therapy throughout the country.

The percentage of Americans using massage therapists has more than doubled since 1997. Doctors are increasingly recommending massage for their patients.

Massage therapy customers also tend to get massages frequently. Those who seek therapeutic massage from trained professionals average 7 visits per year. The growing population of elderly and aging baby boomers continues to fuel strong demand for massage therapy.

Frisco & Plano Susan G. Komen for the Cure Teams Each Win $1000 Sponsorships from DFW Massage Envy Clinics

Breast Friends Forever and Third Base or Bust will walk in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure on June 12

Two walk teams in the upcoming 2010 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure North Texas have won $1000 sponsorships each for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Massage Envy, a long-time race supporter, sponsored the essay contest and the prizes.

Frisco resident Laurie Brosius of Breast Friends Forever, one of the winning teams, wrote in her essay that the team “is walking for the past, present and future. My husband and I walk in memory of his mother who lost her battle to breast cancer in 1997. My best friend Nikki and her husband walk in memory of her grandmother. We are also celebrating our friend Cathy Rosen’s second year as a survivor. Nikki and I met (survivor) Ana Moss in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure 2008.”

Ms. Brosius said the 10-member team is also walking “so our daughters, nieces and other family members do not have to go through this in their lifetime. We have a common goal – to end breast cancer. Together as Breast Friends Forever, we can do it.” Follow the team at http://our3day.com and at http://laviedelaurie.com.

Team Breast Friends Forever has 10 participants; two are survivors of breast cancer.

Plano resident, Erica Brown of team Third Base or Bust said she started volunteering for Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Texas 10 years ago. She said her grandmother Avis, age 96, is a 26-year survivor “and I can only dream of being as strong as she.”

Five other remarkable women that she loves are also survivors, Ms. Brown wrote. “These women are my heroes,” she said. “I raise money especially for them but also for every woman and man that has fought or is fighting (breast cancer). My efforts fail in comparison with their battles, but I will continue to raise awareness until we find a cure.”

Team Third Base or Bust has 30 participants; two are direct survivors of breast cancer.

“We had such an overwhelming response that we could not pick just one team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure sponsorship,” said Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Developer for Massage Envy, the nation’s leading provider of massage therapy. “As a long-time supporter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the DFW Massage Envy clinics are thrilled to be sponsoring these two deserving teams. We look forward to seeing all the participants at our Massage Envy tent Saturday for free chair massages for everyone.”

Besides its two $1000 donations, Massage Envy will also supply co-branded shirts to the two teams they sponsor. The three members on each team who raise the most money will also receive a Massage Envy gift card for a free massage.

On race day, a special area at Massage Envy’s tent will be reserved for team members to receive a free chair massage from Massage Envy therapists.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure North Texas on Saturday, June 12 will be held at the Plano campuses of HP and the Campus at Legacy (Legacy at Parkwood Drive, east of the North Dallas Tollway). All funds from the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure go to research, education, screening and treatment programs.
