DFW Massage Envy Sponsor Local Southlake Team in Tarrant County’s Race for the Cure

Massage Envy has selected Stewart Title Southlake Sole Sisters as the winner of its Susan G. Komen Tarrant County Race for the Cure Sponsorship Sweepstakes. The 15-member team will receive a $1000 donation, co-branded team shirts and a free chair massage on race day from licensed therapists in the Massage Envy tent. Additionally, Massage Envy will provide gift cards as prizes for the team members who raise the most money.

The Tarrant County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is dedicated to combating breast cancer by raising money to fund grants to local hospitals and community organizations that provide breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for medically underserved women. The first Tarrant County Race for the Cure was held in 1993 and raised $100,000. Today, the race is the largest charitable 5K race in Tarrant County, and the 2009 Race for the Cure had more than 14,000 participants and raised more than $1.5 million.

The Massage Envy Sponsorship Sweepstakes was created to benefit the 2010 Tarrant County Komen Race for the Cure on April 24 at Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth. The contest took place from March 16 to April 2 and individuals throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area nominated teams by posting a 300-word essay on Massage Envy DFW’s Facebook page.

The winning entry was submitted by Jenae Hibbard, a member of the Stewart Title Southlake Sole Sisters from Southlake, Texas. After joining together for team-building exercises for other charity events, the co-ed team members were surprised to learn that many of them have been directly affected by breast cancer – whether through helping family members and friends battle the disease or even by personally surviving breast cancer. Discovering this information led them to band together again to support a cause that has touched so many lives.

“Not one more baby should have to give up their mother to this disease and not one more man should lose the love of his life,” says Jenae Hibbard. “No one deserves this, so on April 24 we will join together to find away to stop breast cancer from affecting anyone ever again. We will walk for a mother, a wife, an acquaintance, a stranger – for anyone who has been devastated by this disease.”

Massage Envy supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure on many of their events, including a unique annual event called Massage for the Cure. Held each year in the fall, Massage for the Cure is a one-day event that raises money for the organization by offering discounted massages and donating a portion of each massage to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Many Massage Envy clinics and therapists have donated 100% of all revenue and fees for the day to support the charity.

“Breast cancer affects the lives of many people in our community,” says Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Developer for Massage Envy. “We are proud to support the Tarrant County Race for the Cure and help raise awareness and funds that provide programs and research to help us see the end of this disease.”

Massage Envy is Getting in Touch with Arthritis Pain Management

With over 46 million Americans suffering from arthritis, it is one of the leading causes of disability and high health care costs in the U.S. Massage Envy clinics in the DFW Metroplex offer massage therapy programs that can help individuals cope with the chronic pain of arthritis.

Arthritis is categorized as a joint disease, mostly affecting the cartilage around the joint. Symptoms of arthritis include pain, swelling and loss of motion in the joint. Most sufferers report that arthritis limits normal activities and significantly decreases quality of life. Unfortunately, there is no cure for arthritis. Sufferers face high healthcare costs and often come to rely on drugs that have little effect on the pain or, worse, cause other health issues.

The good news is that massage therapy has been shown to be an effective method for combating arthritis symptoms. While many massage therapists have long cited the benefits their clients describe after receiving massage therapy, science is beginning to back these anecdotal reports with clinical evidence.

In 2006, researchers from Yale Prevention Research Center held a 16-week clinical trial involving 64 individuals with arthritis. The results showed that massage therapy improved flexibility, lessened pain and improved range of motion in the participants. Another study conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami – School of Medicine showed that ongoing massage can lower anxiety, reduce pain, and improve grip strength for those with arthritis.

Massage Envy offers affordable, drug-free relief from arthritis pain. Its Massage Wellness Program for arthritis sufferers is designed to improve joint movement, relax tense muscles, and stimulate the flow of blood and nutrients to the skin and underlying tissues. Additionally, the relaxation achieved through therapeutic massage helps break the cycle of pain and stress that often accompanies and complicates arthritis.

“Not only does each session feel great, but the therapeutic benefits are compounded when massage is utilized as a frequent therapy,” says C.G. Funk, Licensed Massage Therapist and Vice President of Industry Relations and Product Development for Massage Envy. “The more you go, the healthier you feel.”

Massage Envy Mother and Daughter Team Takes a Hands-on Approach to Business Ownership

Mother-daughter relationships are some of the most fascinating and complex interactions. For co-owners of the Texas Massage Envy clinic in the Lake Prairie Towne Crossing shopping center in Grand Prairie, mother Sharon Wright and daughter Wendy Wright, the relationship has taken on a whole new dynamic.

While working as a lawyer in Houston, daughter Wendy Wright had always dreamed of owning her own business. After visiting a local Massage Envy clinic, Wendy had such a positive experience that she began researching franchise opportunities with the company. She found that what appealed to her as a client also made ownership an inviting business prospect – Massage Envy’s dedication to providing affordable, licensed massage therapy to the masses.

Rather than embark on this new path alone, Wendy approached her mother Sharon and asked her to participate. As a school teacher approaching retirement, Sharon welcomed the idea of partnering with her daughter both to show support and to secure her own financial future.

Because Sharon is still employed full-time, Wendy primarily runs the business with input from her mother. Upon retirement, Sharon will take on a more prominent role. One of their first decisions was to make the business a true family affair by hiring Misty Clark, Wendy’s older sister, as clinic administrator to manage the day-to-day business operations. This decision allows Wendy to handle the bigger picture issues of owning a business, including behind-the-scenes decisions and public promotion.

“Mom and I both are so proud to be women who are first-time business owners,” says daughter Wendy. “It is so exciting to hear clients tell us how great their Massage Envy experience is and to know that we made it possible for them.”

As with any business relationship, conflicts do arise. However, all three agree that family is the most important relationship they share and that it is essential to not let their business disagreements interfere with the quality of their bond outside of the clinic. When differences of opinion arise, they try to take a step back and handle the situation as if they were not related. Wendy believes this approach helps each to avoid over-personalizing the disagreement and enables them all to see the situation objectively.

“It also helps to spend some personal time together outside of work doing something you all enjoy and not discussing the business,” says mother Sharon.

And speaking of Mother’s Day, Massage Envy gift cards make wonderful Mother’s Day gifts. Gift cards are available in all denominations.

Including the Grand Prairie location, Massage Envy has 27 DFW area clinics.
