Now is the Time to Use Flex Spending Dollars, says Massage Envy

Here’s a way to enjoy the health benefits of massage therapy before the end of the year: Tap the money in your Flexible Savings Account (FSA).

Flex accounts are used for healthcare expenses that aren’t covered by insurance plans. They help cover the costs of anything from deductibles to eyewear. Many people are unaware that money from a FSA can be used for massage therapy.

“Our therapists at Massage Envy® are finding that more and more clients are using their flex accounts for massage therapy sessions,” says Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Developer for Massage Envy, the leading provider of massage therapy in the U.S. “People with flex accounts in their health care plans are trying to use up any excess dollars that otherwise would not carry over into the next year.”

As long as a physician recommends massage therapy with a written prescription, it can be considered a medical expense. An IRS ruling states that medical care expenses must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental ailment. Examples of illnesses that qualify include carpal tunnel syndrome, stress, back pain, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

If you suffer from one of these conditions, tell your medical practitioner you have a Flex Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) and that you need a prescription for massage therapy to treat your condition.

Your physician must provide three pieces of information on the prescription:

–Medical necessity: why you need massage therapy (example: to relieve back pain)

–Frequency: number of sessions per month (example: minimum of two sessions monthly)

–Duration: length of treatment (example: 12 months)

Once you have obtained the prescription, file it away in case you are ever asked to back up the expense. It isn’t necessary to bring the prescription to your Massage Envy.

Myotherapy Eliminates Pain Often Misdiagnosed as Arthritis, says Massage Envy

Trigger-point massage, uses cycles of isolated pressure and release to alleviate pain sources. During trigger-point massage therapy sessions at Massage Envy, the client plays an active role through deep-breathing. Clients also play a crucial role in the success of trigger-point massage therapy by identifying the exact location of discomfort.

The actual “trigger-point” is considered a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. As an example, a “trigger-point” in the back may cause, or trigger, pain in the neck. The neck might then act as a satellite trigger-point, causing pain in the head. The pain could vary from a dull ache to a sharp, intense pain.

“Basically, a trigger-point pain is caused from muscle overuse, or even injury,” says C.G. Funk, Licensed Massage Therapist and Vice President of Industry Relations and Product Development for Massage Envy.

Trigger-point massage therapy is just one of the many forms of massage therapy offered at Massage Envy that has its own specific function. It is important for anyone considering massage therapy as a solution to any pain, discomfort or illness, that they discuss their symptoms with their massage therapist in order to achieve the most relief possible.
