Bruce McGovern, owner of four Massage Envy clinics throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area, has recently been recognized as Massage Envy’s “Franchisee of the Year.” This recognition notes McGovern’s financial success, his handling of multiple franchises, and his activity in effective regional advertising campaigns.
“There are over 500 Massage Envy clinics nationwide. Mr. McGovern’s leadership stood out as the best of the best. He consistently displays excellence in customer service, superb staffing skills and financial success,” said Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth regional developer for Massage Envy clinics, the leading provider of massage therapy in the U.S. “He is always contributing ideas and works hard to enhance the Massage Envy brand.”
McGovern’s DFW clinics are located at the Old Town Shopping Center, Preston Parker Crossing Shopping Center, Preston Trail Crossing Shopping Center, and the Prestonwood Town Center which he just opened in August of 2008.
McGovern’s clinics have more than 5,700 members and over 130 employees. “We currently have openings for another 25 licensed massage therapists,” said McGovern. “At the rate we’re growing we’ll be at 200 employees by the end of the year.”
Combined, McGovern’s clinics perform more than 6,700 massages every month. Recently, his Old Town Shopping Center clinic set a Massage Envy record for most massages in one month with 3,237 massages.
“My Old Town location was the first Massage Envy clinic to open in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. When I decided to open it, I knew I wanted to be a part of Massage Envy. Our members enjoy the endless therapeutic and stress relieving benefits of massage therapy as often as they like at a fraction of the typical massage price,” said McGovern.
McGovern also attributes his success to his employees. He states that most of his therapists have more than 5 years of professional experience. “In fact, some of our massage therapists have over 20 years of experience.”
It’s McGovern’s attention to the details in customer service, personal attention, marketing, vendor relationships and employee training that has earned McGovern so much success and the new recognition of Massage Envy’s Franchisee of the Year award.
Additionally, McGovern invests in advertising and expanding awareness of Massage Envy. “In 2008, the Dallas/Fort Worth Massage Envy owners pooled our marketing and advertising dollars together and hired The Barber Shop Marketing. The Barber Shop Marketing has advised us to advertise and participate in promotions, cross promotions and public relations this past year when some small businesses have been cutting back. We are seeing great results with this partnership, including new leads, first time visitors and overall sales.”
When asked what makes him a success, McGovern states, “Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Stick to the basics and make sure that you hire good people that take care of your clients. When you’re in a customer service business, like Massage Envy, your customer service is only as good as your weakest link. We are very good at customer service.”
At Massage Envy, an introductory one-hour massage session (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) is just $39. Jennifer Smith and Jason Michaels met at the Massage Envy clinic in Rowlett where they work. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.
“We started getting to know each other because we had many shifts that overlapped,” Jennifer said. “I was drawn to the fact that he was so nice and treated me and everyone with respect. He was also very honest and ethical, and never spoke badly of people behind their backs.”
“I wasn’t really looking for a relationship, I was focused on my career,” Jason recalls. “She was pretty, friendly and seemed like a nice person. The more I got to know her the more I realized we had a lot in common.”
After about two months they went on their first real date — a great dinner and a nice evening. Both started to wonder if this could be something more.
When they went to church together, “that’s when I knew there was a deep connection starting to form,” Jason said.
“I love his smile and his laugh,” Jennifer said, “He stays positive about life. He also treats me like nobody else ever has, and I can feel how much he loves me.”
For Jason, “I love Jennifer’s eyes and her laughter. She helps me relax and stay focused on the things in life that are truly important. She has a gentle but firm way that I appreciate so much.”
The couple picked out a ring in June of 2008. “I was saving up all of my cash tips to pay for it,” Jason recalls. “I finally got it [the ring] paid off about a year later, and was looking for the perfect moment to propose.”
Jason asked Jennifer’s parents for their permission after he made the final payment on the ring. He proposed on the Friday before Labor Day weekend.
“We went to the pond down the street from my home to relax and feed the ducks,” Jennifer remembers. “He was standing there and turned and asked, ‘how much do you love me?’ Then before I knew it he got down on one knee and pulled out a box with a ring in it and put it on my finger. I was so excited that all I said was ‘Jason,’ and gave him a big hug. He asked if that was a yes and I just nodded my head and started to cry.”
“I caught her off guard because I had told her that I couldn’t pay off the ring till late September,” Jason said. “I wanted the proposal to be a surprise. I had butterflies in my stomach and was stressed, but didn’t really realize it until after she said yes. Then I was finally able to breathe and relax.”
Jennifer and Jason were married May 16, 2009 in Bonham, Texas, at her parents’ ranch house. The couple traveled to San Antonio by train for their honeymoon along the River Walk.
Rick and April Klics, owners of the Massage Envy clinic in Rowlett, gave the newlyweds the trip as a wedding gift. “The Klics are awesome people,” Jennifer said.
Jennifer describes their relationship as blissful. “Jason is a great guy and I am so happy I found him. I went looking for a job, and instead I found a career and a life,” she said.
“She’s fun to be around, and is my best friend,” Jason says of Jennifer. “I hope it stays this way forever.”

There’s nothing better than a vacation, but without the right planning – a refreshing vacation can easily turn into a stressful vacation. The wrong vacation can turn out to be just as draining as the work environment the vacation was intended to escape.
“It’s important that people take the stress out of their vacations,” says Lance O’Pry, DFW regional developer for Massage Envy, the leading provider of massage therapy in the U.S. “Too many people try to cram too much stuff into a vacation and wind up exhausting themselves. You’ve got to take it easy.”
Here are some things you can do to make sure you come back to reality refreshed:
Start off right – Decide on the right vacation. If it’s a family vacation, get a feel for what everybody wants to do.
Build a realistic schedule – You can’t see everything, so don’t exhaust yourself trying. Going out of your way to spend a few minutes at every tourist spot is going to wear you out.
Rest – Get some sleep before you take off and try to get sleep every night of your vacation.
Be healthy – Always be clean, especially when traveling outside of the country. Don’t let a cold ruin your vacation!
Free-up time – Print out your boarding pass ahead of time, pack the car the night before, and do whatever you can to avoid lines and give yourself more time to relax.
Unwind – Schedule a massage for the day you return home and give yourself some time to unwind before you restart.
You can enjoy the reciprocal benefits of massage anywhere at any of Massage Envy’s nationwide locations. With over 500 Massage Envy locations and another 300 set to be established in the next few years, so you’ll have no trouble unwinding from a vacation or even starting a vacation.
